THE DRESS – Theater to Remember
A lively culture of remembrance is an important part of our collective memory.
The play is centered on the fates of young women who were deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp to make haute couture for high-ranking Nazi functionaries and their wives in the “Upper Sewing Room” under the direction of Hedwig Höß, wife of camp commandant Rudolf Höß. Their workplace was a site of mass extermination. Individual fashion pieces were created from what once belonged to millions of deportees. Each dress stood for life or death.
Inspired by the example of “The Dressmakers of Auschwitz,” the play intends to sensitize young people and adults to mechanisms of exclusion.
“Forgetfulness leads to exile, while remembrance is the secret to redemption.”
